Katie Rogner Qualifies For U.S. Women's Amateur

Youngstown State women's golfer Katie Rogner (Warren, Ohio) has qualified for the 109th United States Women's Amateur Golf Championships which will be held August 4-10 in Eugene, Ore.

Rogner, who qualified for the event by carding a 78 in a tournament at Longue Vue Country Club in Veroma, Pa., will be one of 156 golfers to compete at the Eugene Country Club. Practice rounds will take place on August 2-3.

Playing in this event will cap an impressive year for Rogner. In her freshman campaign at YSU, she was named the Horizon League Golfer of the Year, the HL's Newcomer of the Year and took home medalist honors at the 2008 Horizon League Championships.

Last year Maria Jose Uribe, now a sophomore at UCLA, won the Amateur Championship, which was held at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.

YSU Signs Jamie Berndt of Canfield

Youngstown State’s Women’s Golf Coach Roseann Schwartz announced that Canfield High School standout Jamie Berndt has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the program in the fall.

Coming off her senior season at Canfield, Berndt was named to the First-Team All-Metro Athletic Conference squad. Berndt was also a Second-Team All-Northeast Ohio selection.p; As a junior, Berndt helped guide the Cardinals to an appearance at the state tournament. As a team the Cardinals finished 11th, while Berndt placed in 51st after carding a two-round total of 185 (93-92).

Berndt was also the recipient of the Ohio Girls Golf Foundation Scholarship. Her coach at Canfield was Diane McCall.

Berndt joins Samantha Formeck (Northern Cambria, Pa.) and Amanda Spitzer (Uniontown, Ohio) as signees who will join the program this fall.

Penguins Valiant Effort Lands Them Third at League Championships

Lebanon, Ohio -- The Youngstown State men’s golf team was down one stroke in the third and final round of the Horizon League Championships, but could not overtake Cleveland State and Detroit for the lead at Shaker Run Golf Club and finished third.

Entering the final round on Tuesday, the Guins were down six strokes at the Championships. A late rally by the team got them within one, but Cleveland State and Detroit were able to withstand the rally.

As a team the Guins finished third after shooting a three round total of 896 (303-296-297). League Champions Cleveland State finished the event with a total of 892 (294-299-299), while Detroit was only one stroke back with an 893 (295-301-297). YSU had the lowest second and third-round totals.

Individually no Penguin shot out of the top 20, and two were in the top 10.

Leading the way for the Penguins with a sixth-place finish was freshman Michael Turner who carded a 223 (75-74-74). Joining Turner in the top 10 was fellow freshman Spenser Sulzener whose three round total of 224 (74-74-76) put him in ninth.

Just outside the top 10 was junior Ryan Stoke, who finished in 12th place after firing a 227 (81-73-73). Sophomore Tim Morrow’s three-round total of 228 (75-75-78) was good for 14th place at the event.

Ross Beal, the only senior playing in the event for the Penguins finished his career by shooting a 232 (79-79-74), resulting in a 19th place finish.

The finish was YSU's best at the league meet since coming in second in 2006.

Katie Rogner Named Player and Newcomer of the Year; Schwartz Top Coach

Carmel, Ind. – Freshman Katie Rogner will forever be in the Youngstown State women's golf history books as she becomes the first player in school history to be selected Player of the Year as well as the Newcomer of the Year in the Horizon League, the conference announced on Sunday.

Only a freshman Rogner wasted no time leaving her mark on the program. This season she has had the lowest score in every event the Penguins competed in. She also won medalist honors in last her two events including the Horizon League Championships.

Joining Rogner on the All Horizon League Team were Butler golfers Lauren Showers and Paige McCracken, Loyola’s Lucy McGovern, and Detroit’s Mandi Dupuis,
Rachel McHenry, and Ashley Hamilton.

Also taking home season honors was Coach Roseann Schwartz. Schwartz was named the Horizon League Women's Golf Coach of the Year for her efforts during the 2007-08 campaign. YSU won three tournaments during the year.

Rogner and the Penguins wrapped up the season with a second-place finish in the Horizon League Championships.

Rogner Rallies To Earn Medalist Honors; YSU Places Second

Carmel, Ind. – Youngstown State freshman women's golfer Katie Rogner (Warren, Ohio) shot an ever-par 72 to overtake Butler's Lauren Showers and earn medalist honors at the Horizon League Championships which concluded on Sunday at Plum Creek Golf Club.

Rogner finished with a three-round score of 230 to finish two strokes ahead of Showers' 232 total. After rounds of 78 and 80 on Saturday, Rogner was steady on Sunday finishing with an even-par 72. She trailed Showers by two strokes after the first and second round.

In the team race, the Penguins came in second place, seven shots behind the Bulldogs. Butler shot a three-round team score of 954 (326-316-312) while Guins carded a 961 (324-324-313). Detroit (987) finished third, Cleveland State was fourth, Loyola fifth and Green Bay sixth.

Junior Mollie Boney, who was competing in her first HL Tournament, placed ninth with a three-round 245. Boney carded rounds of 83, 80 and 82 en route to her ninth-place finish. Tying with Boney for ninth was senior Adiranna DiLonardo. DiLonardo had rounds of 79, 83 and 83 to also shot a 245.

Senior Felicia Ciotola finished 12th with a 247. Ciotola had rounds of 84 and 85 on Saturday before posting a 78 on Sunday. Senior Brittany Jones tied for 14th place with a 249. Jones had rounds of 87, 81 and 81 during the event.

Rogner is the first YSU golfer to win the Horizon League Championship since Lori Hatcher won the 2003 event. Rogner was the only Penguin to earn all-tournament honors.

YSU in Second After Two Rounds At Horizon League Championships

Carmel, Ind. – The Youngstown State women’s golf team is in second place, six stroked behind leader Butler after the first two rounds of the Horizon League Championships at Plum Creek Golf Club. The final 18 holes is scheduled for Sunday.

The Penguins grabbed the opening round lead carding a 324 to go shots in front of the Bulldogs. During the second round, Butler fired a 316 while the Guins again had a 324. After two rounds the Penguins are at 648 while Butler is in first at 642. Detroit is third with a 664.

Leading the way for Youngstown State was freshman Katie Rogner. Rogner is tied for second place with Detroit's Rachel McHenry. Both competitors carded a 158 and trail Butler's Lauren Showers by just two strokes entering the final round.

Rogner had rounds of 78 and 80 to move into second place.
Senior Adrianna DiLonardo is tied for sixth place with a two-round score of 162 (79-83). Junior Mollie Boney is tied for eighth with a 163. Boney had rounds of 83 and 80 making her first appearance at the Horizon League Tournament.

Senior Brittany Jones rebounded from a first-round 87 to shot 81 in the second round and is tied for 11th with her 168. Senior Felicia Ciotola is tied for 14th with a 169 after shoting rounds of 84 and 85.

The final round is set for 8 a.m. on Sunday. Rogner is in the final pairing of the morning teeing off with McHenry and Showers at 9:10 a.m.

Men Finish Ninth at Kent State Invitational

Ravenna, Ohio -- The Youngstown State men's golf team placed ninth at the 12-team Kent State Invitational during Saturday's 36-hole action at Windmill Lakes Golf Club on Saturday.

The Penguins, who will be competing at the Horizon League Championships on Monday and Tuesday, carded rounds of 383 and 373 to finish with a 756. Kent State, which is ranked 35th in the nation, won the event with a 712.

Leading the way for the Penguins was sophomore Tim Morrow. Morrow tied for 13th place with a 145 (74-71). Freshman Michael Turner tied for 37th with a 150 (75-75), freshman Spenser Sulzener was 53rd with a 153 (78-75), senior Ross Beal placed 58th firing a 155 (77-77), junior Ryan Stocke was 65th with a 156 (81-75) and senior Ryan McGraw was 67th with a 157 (79-78).

Stocke Places Second, Guins Take Fourth at Detroit Invitational

Plymouth, Mich. – YSU junior golfer Ryan Stocke took second place while the men’s golf team finished in fourth at the Detroit Titan Invitational which concluded on Saturday at Golden Fox Golf Club.

Stocke lead the way for the Penguins finishing in second only one stroke behind medalist Mark Sommerfeld of Detroit, carding a three round total of 214 (72-73-69). Stocke trailed Sommerfeld by six strokes entering today's round before carding a 69 to put the heat on. His 69 was the low round of the day.

Freshman Spenser Sulzener finished in 18th after firing a three-round total of 228 (80-74-74).

Also contributing for the Guins were senior Ross Beal, sophomore Tim Morrow and freshman Michael Turner. Beal had a three-round total of 229 (76-76-77), which was good for 21st. Morrow finished in 34th place scoring a 235 (84-74-77). Turner finished the event in 38th place after shooting a 237 (77-82-78).

Entering the final round the Penguins were tied for third, but could not catch Detroit. Finishing behind Detroit was Horizon League members Loyola in second and Cleveland State in third place.

The Penguins are off until April 26 when they take part in the Kent State First Energy Invitational at Windmill Lakes Golf Club.

Stocke in Second, Penguins in Third At Detroit Invitational

Plymouth, Mich. - After completing the second round of three, Junior Ryan Stocke is tied for second and the Penguins are tied for third of the Detroit Invitational.

As a team YSU’s total after round two is a 602 (305-297) tied with Dayton and Cleveland State. YSU only trails Horizon League Members Detroit and Loyola for the top spot.

Leading the way for the Penguins is junior Ryan Stocke who carded a two round total of 145 (72-73). In 13th place is senior Ross Beal whose two round total is 152 (76-76).

Also participating in the Invite is freshman Spenser Sulzner 80-74 (154) who is in 22nd. Firing a 158 (84-74) was sophomore Tim Morrow who is currently in 33rd. Only one stroke behind Morrow in 36th place is freshman Michael Turner with a 159 (77-82).

The Penguins will wrap up the event on Saturday.

Katie Rogner Named Horizon League Performer of the Week

After taking home medalist honors the Loyola Caputo Invitational, Youngstown State women's golfer Katie Rogner (Warren, Ohio) was named the Horizon League Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Rogner shot a two-round total of 152 (76-76), which tied for fourth place in YSU history for a 36-hole event. Rogner’s effort helped the Penguins finish in first place at Loyola and their third team victory this year.

Rogner, a freshman, was named the Golfer of the Week in September. She had two second-place finishes before earning her first career tournament title on Tuesday.
Loyola's Armando Favela was named the HL Men's Golfer of the Week.

YSU will look to keep the winning going when they compete in the Horizon League Championships on April 26-27 in Carmel, Ind.
